I just saw a news report which stated that we may be entering a recession because people are becoming "too green conscious".
According to this CNN report: Hybrid cars are cutting into profits for gas stations and oil companies. Also cutting into oil profits are the fact that grocery chains are discouraging "double-bagging" and selling re-useable cloth grocery bags (plastics are an oil by-product, therefore by using fewer bags it’s further cutting into oil profiteers pockets). Furthermore people are using less water, shutting off lights when they leave rooms, not driving when they don’t have to* and in general, in their day-to-day lives are being less wasteful in an effort to curb global warming. The result is they’re also spending less because they are receiving less crap they don’t actually need.
Nevermind the housing crisis; It’s the fucking hippies! - EVERYBODY PANIC! SPEND! SPEND! SPEND! BUSINESS AS USUAL! ALL IS WELL!!!
I personally think this report is the biggest load of crap I’ve witnessed on a major news network in ages and it reminds me why I look to foreign news sources to find anything out about what’s going on inside my own sorrowful country.
Here I’ve always considered not being wasteful a good thing. Now we have CNN telling us, essentially, that whatever we’re doing to curb ecological waste is what is hurting the economy. If you waste less, you spend less... and that’s bad for business. So do your part to keep America in the black and open those wallets, double and even triple-bag your single cup of Ben & Jerry’s "Cherry Garcia", leave your lights on and water running at all times... and for gods sake, load up the kids into the family’s now homebroken 4WD, 5 ton Urban Assault Vehicle and take a nice long Sunday drive! Why not stop at McDonalds for a happy meal while you’re at it? Obey obey obey...
Oh! If I only had the knowledge and wherewithal to build my own home and live in seclusion from society... I’m not nearly antisocial enough for that though. I’d end up losing it like Hunter S. Thompson.
*On "not driving when they don’t have to" - This is a double edged sword. Driving less is good because it produces fewer toxins. However if this trend continues, people won’t travel at all to both save gas money and produce less C02. I fear this becoming too common and people frowning upon traveling beyond the city limits, essentially keeping us locked in our hometowns like prisons. I wouldn't want to live in a world without travel and I wouldn't be surprised if a world where the common man can't travel is exactly what the Powers-That-Be want. Then again, my views towards modern society can occasionally take a somewhat Orwellian-Huxley tone.
