In Wyoming, at least ten gray wolves have already been killed since the Bush administration removed these animals from the endangered species list on March 28th. Our only chance to stop the slaughter of this majestic species is in court.
Earthjustice is preparing an aggressive legal response to the killings and to the premature removal of the wolves from the endangered species list.
Help us save the wolves. Make a special contribution today (https://secure.ga0.org/02/Save_The_Wolves_040808/nGpAE5Ld1Ush8?)
Here's where things stand...
The day the federal "delisting" decision became official, Earthjustice served the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with a mandatory notice of intent to sue. When that notice expires on April 28th, our attorneys will be free to hit the Service with a suit to challenge the delisting and bring a halt to the killing. And not a moment too soon.
With a population of only 1,500 in the northern Rockies, there are still not enough wolves to ensure the future survival of an animal that once numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Without federal protections, nearly 80% of the region's wolves could be killed -- a huge setback to years of hard work restoring these iconic creatures to their natural habitat.
Our legal effort is the very last line of defense for the wolf. Please donate today (https://secure.ga0.org/02/Save_The_Wolves_040808/nGpAE5Ld1Ush8?).
We are counting on your support.
Sincerely,

Suit Filed to Stop Wolf Slaughter
Since the Bush administration removed gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains from the endangered species list last month, dozens have been slaughtered by hunters and government agents in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho.
Stepping into the fray, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Natural Resources Defense Council, Defenders of Wildlife, and other groups filed suit Monday morning to stop the slaughter. We're asking that the wolf be returned to the endangered species list and that the slaughter be stopped immediately.

UPDATE: Wolf Killing Halted... For Now
Dear Alex,
In a victory for the gray wolves of the northern Rockies, a federal judge today ruled in favor of Earthjustice's request to stop the wolf slaughter while our case challenging the removal of endangered species protections is heard.
The court ordered that wolves be temporarily protected under the federal Endangered Species Act while it continues to consider the arguments for long term protection.
Once again, the courts have proven to be the best line of defense for threatened wildlife. Earthjustice has the legal expertise that the environmental community relies on when they need to win. Earthjustice represents the environmental community for no cost -- and we win.
But the battle is not over. In the coming weeks, the lawyers of our Northern Rockies office will continue our case to permanently restore protections for the gray wolves. We will keep you posted as news develops.
Please consider supporting this work today (https://secure.ga0.org/02/08_Wolves_TRO/nb7AE5Ld1Oo_3?).
Thank you for standing with us.
Sincerely,
