Dear Alex,

Right now, Congress is considering the Clean Water Restoration Act, important legislation that clarifies that federal safeguards against water pollution must protect all waters of the United States. Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate held an important hearing on this bill, and the House of Representatives will hold a hearing April 16. Now is the time to tell Congress to stand up for clean water and support the Clean Water Restoration Act!
For 35 years the Clean Water Act has been our safeguard against pollution in our streams, lakes, wetlands, rivers and other waters where we swim, fish and play, and which supply clean drinking water for more than 110 million Americans.
Polluters, developers, and corporations are seeking to place profit over health by dismantling the Clean Water Act. Muddied rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court have created uncertainty as to which waters are protected under federal law. Federal agencies have issued confusing and ambiguous guidelines on which waters are protected -- and which waters aren't -- by the Clean Water Act. Entire lakes and headwaters are losing their vital safeguards, leaving them open to damage or destruction by industrial pollution and unchecked development.
The Clean Water Act cannot work if half of the streams, rivers, and wetlands across the country are left out of the law's protective scope. But there is still hope to protect our waters. The Clean Water Restoration Act will shore up clean water protections and ensure that the original intent of the Clean Water Act is honored. More than 175 members of the House of Representatives are co-sponsoring this bill, and 21 Senators are co-sponsoring companion legislation in the Senate.
The momentum is on our side. Now is the time to tell your congressperson to stand up for clean water by supporting the Clean Water Restoration Act -- a strong and sensible vehicle for ensuring the protection of our most precious natural resource. Please make your voice heard today. (http://action.earthjustice.org/campaign/cwara0408/wenux3x41m3e665?) -Earthjustice
Because the earth needs a good lawyer
P.S. Please tell a friend (http://action.earthjustice.org/campaign/cwara0408/forward/wenux3x41m3e665?) to take action! We need as many people as possible to let Congress know that they need to make clean water a priority.
